Signs of a leak
- Water inside. If water is coming in and it isn't from a shower, get it looked at right away.
- Ceiling stains. Warped sheetrock, light brown stains, or tape pulling apart between sheetrock panels can mean moisture.
- Mold. Mold can be a sign of a leak and becomes a bigger problem if it isn't addressed quickly.
- Wall separation. Visible separation may point to a foundation issue, which is a different problem from a roof leak.
The #1 cause
Most roof leaks start at the flashing around roof penetrations: the water heater exhaust vent, attic vents such as turbines and box vents, and plumbing vents.
